Gear ratios

This page allows you to compare the road speed of different combinations of transmission and final drive. Click the FD raio you want to see under the column heading of the transmission you want to match it to, and you should see a line appear (Javascript must be enabled). You can click as many as you want and they will overlay each other. There's a 'clear' button for when you want to start over.

Display speed at 1200 or 5000 RPM

All speeds assume 6.6 foot circumference wheel, no slippage.

Blank = not possible without going crazy. For instance, mating a twinshock final drive to a K-bike.

Information is certain to be incomplete.

*6-speed notes: K1200RS, R1200C, and GS Sport use 'Sport.' R1150GS Adventure uses 'Enduro.' K12LT used both Sport and Standard at different times.

Gear ratios

The following crown gearsets exist in BMW Monolever and Paralever motorcycles (not including Airheads). All have the same 20t pinion spline except for the early K100.

Type 1 pinion: 42mm tip to nut face, no groove (Airhead only)
Type 2 pinion: 28mm tip to nut face, no groove (K75/100 monolever)
Type 2a pinion: 28mm tip to nut face, no groove, 16-tooth pinion spline (early K100)
Type 3 pinion: 30mm tip to nut face, groove (K & R Paralever, R1200C)

Pinion spline length

The spline on the Airhead Paralever pinion is longer. This is due to the fact that whereas the U-joints on most models are coaxial with the swingarm pivots, the U-joints on the Airhead driveshaft are about 12mm farther forward (at the front and rear of the swingarm). Rather than have a very long nose on the rear U-joint, BMW extended the pinion spline. Paralever Airheads have either the 3.09 or 3.20 (not in the US) gear ratio, so only two gearsets are affected by this change.
